DARYL TOL
Head of Health Assurance Ecosystem
General Catalyst
Daryl Tol served for two decades in the C suites of regional and national healthcare organizations, yet he describes his favorite work as helping patients find services they lack, new forms of advocacy, and enhanced transparency. He sees Health Assurance as a fundamental formula for human thriving – meaning there are many levers for reducing friction, inefficiency, and cost while increasing innovation, collaboration, and effectiveness of care.
At Advent Health, where he ran one of the largest hospital systems in the US, Daryl’s focus included identifying the frustrations patients should never endure, and then recasting them as a set of positive experiences patients should come to expect. With his national perspective embracing people, facilities, science, technology, finance, policies and payments, he convened the conversations necessary for advancing this mission.
Daryl leads General Catalyst’s Health Assurance Ecosystem, which aims to merge the best ideas, processes and technologies from emerging entrepreneurs and forward-thinking healthcare systems. His role is to help develop a number of model transformations with healthcare organizations that prove the health assurance thesis: Healthcare can deliver better outcomes at lower costs while attracting new talent and investment to one of the most important and vibrant industries in the world.
Away from work, Daryl gets outdoors, preferably on the water or a mountain, or he travels to immerse himself in foreign cultures. He continues to advise the pioneering mental health non-profit One Mind, focusing on global efforts around improving mental health in the workplace.

DR. STEPHEN DAVIS
President and CEO
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center
Steve Davis, MD, has been president and CEO of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center since November 22, 2021. He previously served six years as chief operating officer.
Dr. Davis was the driving force behind the medical center’s largest expansion ever, a $600 million Critical Care Building that opened in 2021 for patients with cancer, heart ailments, or other complex conditions. It also features a state-of-the-art emergency department, which serves Cincinnati and surrounding neighborhoods.
Cincinnati Children’s, a $2.7 billion nonprofit with a workforce of 16,500, is the region’s largest hospital system and second-largest employer. The 1.5 million patient encounters in fiscal 2020-21 benefited kids from all 50 states and 32 countries, including children with complex or rare disorders. As the medical center approaches its 150th birthday in 2033, Cincinnati Children’s is dedicated to “Pursuing Our Potential Together, So All Kids Can Pursue Theirs” – a long-range plan that elevates and accelerates care, cure, community, and cultural aspirations.
“I see my job as helping to put everybody in the organization in the best position possible to take great care of our patients, to continue learning and teaching, and to do the research that will benefit kids in the future,” Dr. Davis said. “I am an absolutely tireless advocate for kids and will always be. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that you have to create an environment that’s a great place to work so that people can put their best foot forward.”
In 2021, Cincinnati Children’s was recognized by Forbes as No. 38 among America’s Best Employers across all industries. And for more than a decade, Cincinnati Children’s has ranked among the Top 5 in U.S. News & World Report’s survey of Best Children’s Hospitals.
Cincinnati Children’s is among top recipients of pediatric research grants bestowed by the National Institutes of Health. Sponsored awards to the medical center total more than $240 million annually, with the majority coming from the NIH. Nearly one-third of employees at Cincinnati Children’s are engaged in scientific research. Philanthropy to boost research and patient care averages nearly $50 million annually.
“At Cincinnati Children’s, our people have the expertise, dedication, and heart to transform child health,” Dr. Davis said. “Our clinical excellence, focus on safety and improvement, and deep research experience is unmatched. Our collaborative spirit provides the space for each of us to learn, grow, and thrive.”
Before joining Cincinnati Children’s, Dr. Davis was chief operating officer of Hillcrest Hospital, a 500-bed facility with 2,500 employees that is part of the Cleveland Clinic system. Dr. Davis served the Cleveland Clinic in a variety of key positions from 1996 to 2015.
A pediatric critical care physician, Dr. Davis came to Cincinnati Children’s in 2015 because he wants to change the world of healthcare – for children in Cincinnati and beyond. “I envision a world where all children can reach their full potential – where racial and economic disparities have been eliminated, and where the ZIP code you were born in doesn’t shorten life expectancy or quality of life,” Dr. Davis said.
In 2021, Dr. Davis helped Cincinnati Children’s launch HealthVine, a network of pediatric care providers and organizations. It coordinates excellent, equitable, and value-based care and support services for about 135,000 children and their families across Southwest Ohio.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Dr. Davis has played a key role in coordinating the response of local hospitals. As co-chair of the Regional COVID-19 Steering Committee (March 2020-December 2021) and co-chair of the Hamilton County Test and Protect COVID-19 Project, Dr. Davis helped create policies and procedures designed to ensure the best care for patients and to safeguard hospital workers.
Also under the leadership of Dr. Davis, Cincinnati Children’s ramped up telehealth visits during the pandemic – from 2,000 in all of 2019 to more than 5,000 a week in 2020. Many clinical areas now offer telehealth appointments via the CincyKids Health Connect app. Intended for patients who don’t require an in-person visit, the app provides easier access to care for more kids.
In January 2022, Dr. Davis became vice chair of an international network of more than 140 pediatric hospitals – the Children’s Hospitals’ Solutions for Patient Safety. The network’s efforts have saved more than 18,000 children from serious harm and trimmed an estimated $421.9 million in healthcare costs.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1984, Dr. Davis earned a medical degree in 1989 from the University of Vermont. He was a medical resident at Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital from 1989-92 and chief resident from 1992-93. Dr. Davis completed a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1996.
In 2012, Dr. Davis received a master’s in medical management from the Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where he serves on the faculty and teaches leadership development. He earned a master’s in strategic leadership from Michigan State University in 2020.
