Dr. Suja Mathew, MD, FACP was appointed as EVP, Chief Clinical Officer at Atlantic Health System in March, 2022. She oversees the quality, education, research and health equity missions of the organization and collaborates to drive system clinical strategy.
Prior to joining AHS, Dr. Mathew had a long career at Cook County Health in Chicago, Illinois where she served most recently as System Chair of Medicine, responsible for all aspects of internal medicine, neurology, and dermatology services across the health system.
Dr. Mathew holds several influential leadership roles nationally. She is a Regent of the American College of Physicians and chair of the society’s national health and public policy committee, where she has authored several key position papers that guide the practice of medicine. She also serves on the ACP governance committee, the ACP performance measurement committee, and the American Medical Association House of Delegates. She is also an elected member of the AMA’s Council on Medical Education.
Dr. Mathew is a board-certified internal medicine physician. She completed medical school at the Pritzker School of Medicine with AOA honor and residency training at the University of Chicago Hospitals. Dr. Mathew has particular interest in the areas of social determinants of health, nutrition insecurity, and health equity. She co-chairs Doctors for a Hunger Free America. Dr. Mathew is an awarded teacher, mentor, and leader and a recognized humanitarian.
