Dr. Seung-IL Park, born in 1959, earned his degree in medicine (M.D.) from Seoul National
University College of Medicine in 1985, followed by a Master of Medicine (M.S.) in 1990 and a
Ph.D. in 1995, both from Seoul National University College of Medicine. He completed his internship
and residency in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Seoul National University Hospital
(1985–1990), and a fellowship in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Asan Medical Center in
1993–1994. He subsequently completed a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital
(MGH), Harvard University, USA (1997–1998).
Dr. Park is the current President of Asan Medical Center, appointed in 2021 and reappointed for a
third term in 2025. He served as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) & Director for Planning and
Coordination from 2011 to 2016, followed by a four-year tenure as the Vice President & Chief
Medical Officer (CMO).
Dr. Park, Professor of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Of Ulsan College Of
Medicine, is a renowned authority in lung transplantation, having successfully performed Korea’s first
living donor lung transplantation in 2017. His clinical expertise encompasses thoracic surgery with a
focus on lung cancer, esophageal surgery, thoracic oncology, tracheal surgery, and thoracoscopic
surgery. He has dedicated his career to advancing surgical oncology and minimally invasive thoracic
techniques.
Dr. Park has been extensively involved in national medical societies and policy committees. He has
served as a board member and officer in the Korean Association for Lung Cancer, the Korean Society
for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Korean Bronchoesophagology Society, the Korean
Society for Transplantation, and the Korean Society of Thoracic Surgical Oncology. He served as
President of the Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in 2022 and currently serves
as Policy Director of the Korean Council of Teaching Hospitals (2025–2027). He currently serves as
Vice President of the Korean Hospital Association, Senior Vice President of the Korea University
Hospital Association, and Vice President of the Korea International Medical Association.
Dr. Park has received numerous distinguished honors recognizing his academic and professional
contributions. He was awarded the Outstanding Dissertation Award from Seoul National University
College of Medicine in 1998 for his research, ‘The Tumor suppressor effect of CDKN2p16 and its
mechanism of gene expression failure in non-small cell lung cancer.’ He received the Commendation
from the Minister of Health and Welfare of Korea in July 2020. In 2024, he was honored with the
Chong Kun Dang Respected Hospital Figure Award in April and the Republic of Korea Order of
Service Merit (Aquamarine Stripes) in August.
