President, Fairleigh Dickinson University

Michael J. Avaltroni has been serving as president of Fairleigh Dickinson University since 2023. A long-time faculty member and administrator, he is the first FDU graduate to serve as the institution’s president. Under his leadership the University has developed a critical strategic plan titled “FDU Will Soar,” renewed its emphasis on putting students first and forged a more distinctive
focus for the institution’s programs. Among many notable initiatives, the University created FDU Health, a new division uniting programs in the health sciences. It also established Lifelong Learning at FDU, an initiative to educate across the lifespan. And this year Dr. Avaltroni announced the launch of FDU HealthPath Forward, a new strategic initiative that will build a coalition of institutions to help develop healthcare-related programs, enhance workforce training, foster innovation in the sector and position the campuses as hubs for lifelong learning, health and wellbeing.

Dr. Avaltroni previously served as University Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. Prior to that, he was the dean of the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences for a decade and played a leading role in the creation of the school and its rapid development, program growth and success. He first joined the University in 2003 as a faculty member and later became chair of the Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Widely recognized and influential in the higher education sector, Dr. Avaltroni also serves as the chair of the New Jersey Presidents’ Council.
