In his role as CEO, Prof. Kroemer represents Charité in all matters. He is responsible for structural and economic corporate development, making certain that Charité’s various goals are all integrated and that clinical and scientific needs and interests are balanced. Prof. Kroemer has been the CEO of Charité since September 2019.

Heyo K. Kroemer was born in Leer, in Germany’s East Frisia region, on April 4, 1960. He studied pharmacy at the Technical University of Braunschweig, where he received his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.). Following periods of study and research in Basel, Switzerland, and Nashville, Tennessee, he completed the habilitation process in Tübingen, writing his habilitation thesis in the subjects of pharmacology and toxicology. Kroemer was appointed to a position at the University of Greifswald in 1998, where he worked on molecular and clinical issues in drug metabolism in the field of general pharmacology. He served as the dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Greifswald from 2000 until 2012, and starting in 2011, he was also the Chief Scientific Officer of Universitätsmedizin Greifswald.

He served full-time as Dean and Executive Board Spokesperson of University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) from 2012 until 2019 and as the President of the Council of the Faculty of Medicine. Prof. Kroemer is also a member of the German National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina; the Executive Board of the Association of German University Medical Centers (Verband der Universitätsklinika Deutschlands); the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities; and the German National Academy of Science and Engineering, acatech.
